Essaouira is the perfect counterpoint to Marrakech: whitewashed walls, blue shutters, sea air and an unhurried pace. Its 18th-century medina, designed by a French architect for Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah, is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Good to know
- It’s a long day (about 6 hours of driving in total), but the coast rewards it.
- Best months: all year. In July and August, when Marrakech is above 40°C, Essaouira stays around 25°C.
- Ethical choices: we only visit cooperatives where the women who produce the argan oil are fairly paid.

Your driver collects you from your riad or hotel and heads west across the Haouz plain.

See how women in a local cooperative crack, roast and press argan kernels, and taste amlou, a spread of argan oil, almonds and honey.

Arrival in Essaouira
Start with a walk along the Skala de la Ville ramparts, then explore the medina's galleries, thuya-wood workshops and spice stalls.
- 13:00
Lunch at the port
Choose your fish at the harbour stalls and have it grilled on the spot, or pick one of the medina's seafood restaurants.
- 14:30
Free time
Stroll the long sandy beach, watch the kitesurfers, or relax in a café in Place Moulay Hassan.
- 16:30
Return to Marrakech
Arrive back at your riad or hotel around 19:30.
