Excursion Overview

Imlil is the trailhead for Mount Toubkal and the most beautiful valley within easy reach of Marrakech. This walk shows you everyday life in the High Atlas: irrigation channels, mule paths, rooftop terraces and villages where Tashelhit is spoken more than Arabic.

Good to know

  • Temperatures: Imlil is at about 1,740 m, so expect it to be 8–10°C cooler than Marrakech.
  • Local guides: hiking in the national park is done with a licensed local mountain guide, which also supports the villages.
  • Saturday: travel on a Saturday to pass the busy weekly souk in Asni.

Your Day, Hour by Hour

  1. 08:30

    Pickup in Marrakech

    Drive south through the Moulay Brahim gorge and the Asni valley into the High Atlas.

  2. 10:00

    Imlil and your mountain guide

    Meet your local mountain guide in Imlil, the starting point for Toubkal treks.

  3. 10:15

    Hike to Aroumd

    Walk up through walnut and cherry orchards and irrigated terraces to Aroumd, a village of stone and earth houses at about 1,900 m, with views up the valley towards Toubkal.

  4. 12:30

    Lunch with a Berber family

    A home-cooked tagine and mint tea on a village rooftop terrace.

  5. 14:00

    Walk back down to Imlil

    Return by a different path through the valley, with time for photos and a coffee in Imlil.

  6. 15:30

    Return to Marrakech

    Arrive back at your riad or hotel around 17:00.

Excursion FAQ

The standard route is about 3–4 hours of walking in total, with around 400 m of ascent on mule paths. It suits anyone who walks regularly. We can shorten it, or add a mule for part of the way.
No. Toubkal (4,167 m) needs at least two days and good fitness. This day hike stays in the valley, with views of the surrounding peaks. Ask us about the 2-day summit trek.
Walking shoes with good grip, a warm layer (it's much cooler than Marrakech), a hat, sunscreen and a water bottle. In winter, bring gloves and a proper jacket.
Yes. The valley walk usually runs all year, but snow sometimes reaches Imlil between December and February. Your guide will choose a safe route on the day.
