4-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to Fes

Four days is the point where a desert tour stops feeling like a race. This private itinerary connects Marrakech and Fes through the south of Morocco, but instead of a single night in the dunes, it gives you two nights at our luxury camp in Erg Chebbi and a whole day in between. There’s no long drive that day: just sunrise, a 4x4 exploration of the desert and its people, and the evening light on the sand.

The rest of the route covers the great sights of the south: the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge on the way in, and the Ziz Valley, Midelt and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas on the way out to Fes.

The route at a glance

• Day 1: Marrakech → Tizi n’Tichka → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Skoura → Dades Valley (about 350 km)
• Day 2: Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Tinghir → Erfoud → Merzouga, then by camel to camp (about 290 km)
• Day 3: A full day around Erg Chebbi: nomad families, Khamlia and the dunes (about 60 km by 4x4)
• Day 4: Erg Chebbi → Ziz Valley → Midelt → Azrou cedar forest → Ifrane → Fes (about 470 km)

Day 1: Marrakech to the Dades Valley

Your driver meets you at your riad or hotel in the morning. The first hours are spent climbing the High Atlas, with the red plain of Marrakech falling away behind you and the road looping up to the Tizi n’Tichka at 2,260 metres. On the far side, the scenery turns to ochre and rust as you drop towards Ait Ben Haddou. Spend time here: cross the riverbed, climb the lanes of the ksar and look out from the top over the valley and the old caravan route.

In the afternoon you follow the valley east past Ouarzazate. You’ll see the palm grove of Skoura with its old family kasbahs and, in spring, the pink hedges of the Valley of Roses. By late afternoon you’re in the Dades Valley, where the river winds between eroded red cliffs. Dinner and the night are at a kasbah-style hotel.

Day 2: through the Todra Gorge to the dunes

The second morning starts with the “monkey fingers”, knobbly rock formations above the Dades river. Then you drive to Tinghir, where the palm groves stretch for kilometres below the mountains. In the Todra Gorge, just north of the town, you leave the vehicle and walk along the stream between cliffs about 300 metres high.

The afternoon crosses the pre-Saharan plateau via Tinejdad and Erfoud until the orange mass of Erg Chebbi appears on the horizon. In Merzouga, your camel caravan is waiting. You ride out into the dunes for the sunset and arrive at camp as the stars come out. Your bags follow by 4x4.

Day 3: a day in the desert

This is the day that sets the 4-day tour apart. With nowhere to be, you can take the desert at its own pace.

Rise early and climb the dunes above camp for sunrise, then return for a slow breakfast. In the morning your driver takes you out by 4x4 around the edge of the erg:

• Nomad families. Some Amazigh families still live a semi-nomadic life around Erg Chebbi, moving their goats and camels between grazing grounds and wells. You’re invited into their tent for tea and an insight into a way of life that is slowly disappearing.
• Khamlia. This small village is home to a community descended from West Africans who came north with the caravans centuries ago. Their Gnawa music, with its iron castanets (qraqeb), drums and trance-like chants, is played for visitors over mint tea.
• The desert landscape. Stop at viewpoints over the dunes, cross the black stony hamada and look for fossils in the rocks. Your driver knows the tracks that visitors never find alone.

Lunch (at your own cost) is followed by a rest through the hottest part of the day. In the late afternoon you can try sandboarding on the dunes, take a sunset camel ride, or simply sit on a ridge above camp and watch the shadows lengthen. Your second night at camp is quieter than the first: a relaxed dinner, the fire and the stars.

Day 4: north to Fes

After sunrise you ride back to Merzouga for breakfast and set off north. The Ziz river has cut a long green valley through the desert, packed with date palms and earthen villages, and the viewpoint above it is one of the most photographed in the south. The road continues past Errachidia and climbs to Midelt, on a high plateau, for lunch.

In the afternoon you cross the Middle Atlas. The landscape turns green: open pastures, then deep cedar forests around Azrou, where Barbary macaques play by the roadside. After a stop in the mountain town of Ifrane, you descend to Fes and arrive in the evening. Your driver takes you to your accommodation, or to the nearest gate of the medina, where a porter can help with your bags.

Two nights under the Sahara sky

With two nights at camp, you have twice the chance of a perfect night sky. Erg Chebbi is far from any city, and on a clear, moonless night the Milky Way stretches from one horizon to the other. The moon makes a big difference, though: around full moon, the dunes are bathed in silver light and you’ll see fewer stars, which is beautiful in its own way. If stargazing is important to you, check the moon calendar when choosing your dates, and aim for the week around the new moon. Step away from the camp lights, give your eyes 15 minutes to adjust, and bring a warm layer, as the sand loses its heat quickly after dark.

Where you’ll sleep

• Dades Valley (1 night): a traditional kasbah-style hotel with a private room and bathroom, dinner and breakfast.
• Erg Chebbi (2 nights): our luxury desert camp, with a private tent for your booking, en-suite hot shower and flushing toilet, comfortable beds and electricity for charging. Heavy blankets are provided in winter, and family tents are available on request.

Best time to go

The best months are March to May and September to November, when days are warm and nights are cool. In winter, the full desert day is sunny and pleasant, but nights are cold and snow is possible on the passes; your driver adjusts the route if needed. In summer, the desert is very hot in the middle of the day, so the 4x4 excursion starts early and the afternoon is spent resting in the shade until the heat eases.

Good to know

• Day four is the longest, about 7.5 hours to Fes.
• Barbary macaques are wild and endangered, so please don’t feed them.
