About Fes — The Cultural Capital
Fes is northeastern Morocco’s cultural capital. It’s primarily known for its Fes el-Bali walled medina, with medieval Marinid architecture, vibrant souks, and old-world atmosphere. The medina is home to religious schools such as the 14th-century Bou Inania and Al-Attarine, both decorated with elaborate cedar carvings and ornate tilework. It is also home to the University of al-Qarawiyyin, the oldest continuously operating university in the world.
Fes is a step back in time. As you enter through the majestic Bab Boujloud (Blue Gate), the sights, sounds, and scents of medieval Morocco envelop you. With no cars allowed in the medina, you will share the narrow alleys with donkeys, carts, and thousands of artisans selling rugs, leather, spices, and copperware.
